Board of Directors

The governance of recoveriescorp is overseen through the Board of Transaction Capital Risk Services Australia Holdings Pty Ltd, who work collaboratively with all stakeholders of the Group.  The Board comprises of both executive and non-executive directors and their deep industry knowledge and experience extends to core business areas such as legal, commercial and finance, providing recoveriescorp with a robust compliance and reporting environment.  Board Members are listed below:

Joan Fitzpatrick

Chair
BA (Law), LLB, Fellow ANZIIF, CIP, GAICD

Joan Fitzpatrick is an experienced business leader, consultant and non-executive director. Her business experience spans financial services, heavy manufacturing and fast moving consumer goods on an international scale.

Joan has more than 20 years experience as a director and her current positions include:
President of the Emergency Services and State Superannuation Board;
Chair of Sacré Cœur International School Board, Glen Iris;
Non-executive director of Catholic Church insurance and CCIAM;
Non-executive  director of Defence Bank;
Non-executive director of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers; and
Managing Director of Alvearium Pty Ltd.

David Hurwitz

B.Acc (Hons), HDipTax (University of the Witwatersrand), CA(SA)

David is a chartered accountant, having served his articles at Grant Thornton, Johannesburg. He has been active in debt capital markets since 1997, holding employment at both a specialist structured finance organisation and a large local bank.

In 2005 he joined Transaction Capital’s founding shareholders to acquire African Bank’s Commercial Vehicle Finance division (now SA Taxi). Shortly thereafter Transaction Capital was formed, where David established and led the capital markets team for a period of five years, and later served as the CFO of SA Taxi for 18 months. He was appointed to Transaction Capital’s main board as Group Chief Risk Officer in April 2012, thereafter served as the group CFO and in January 2014 was appointed as the group CEO of Transaction Capital Limited.

Mark Josman

CA(SA)

Mark joined the group in September 2017 and is a director of Transaction Capital Risk Services Australia Holdings Pty Ltd, Recoveries Corporation Group Holdings Pty Ltd and Mason Black Lawyers Pty Ltd.

On arrival in Australia in 1993, Mark joined Macquarie Bank’s M&A team, before founding international BPO services company Speedscan Group in 1997, which he led as CEO until its sale in 2014.  Mark qualified in South Africa as a Chartered Accountant with Touche Ross, before founding strategy consulting firm SMC Monitor South Africa.

Michael Mendelowitz

B.Com (Hons), Graduate Diploma Accounting (University of Cape Town), CA(SA) 

After completing his articles at Deloitte & Touche in 1990, Michael co- founded Stratvest in 1995. In 1997, African Bank (then Theta Financial Services Limited) acquired 50% of Stratvest, leading to the formation of Nisela Growth Investments. Michael held the position of joint CEO of Nisela Growth Investments until 2002 and went on to acquire and grow the group of companies that in 2007 became the foundation of Transaction Capital. Michael was appointed as an executive director in December 2011.

David McAlpin

ACMA, MBA B.Com

David McAlpin is the Chief Executive Officer of PIC Solutions and has been the Chief Executive Officer of Risk Services Division at Transaction Capital Limited since October 01, 2014. David serves as an Executive Director of PIC Solutions. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Principa Decisions at Transaction Capital Limited until October 01, 2014. He has over 15 years’ experience both in South Africa and international retail. Mr. McAlpin is involved in the strategic and operational aspects of the business. He served as the Chief Executive of Forza Group Limited for four years. He held various senior positions within the Massmart Group Limited and the Wooltru Group Limited.

During David’s 7 years with the Massmart Group, where he served as Commercial Director and was responsible for IT and Systems Management and Managing Director of Dions Stores. He served as Managing Director of CNA for 3 years, where he was responsible for the turnaround and repositioning of the CNA. He has extensive international and local business experience and held senior executive positions Lewis Group. He served as an Executive Director of Lewis Stores Pty Ltd., a subsidiary of Lewis Group Limited since October 2005. He is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (A.C.M.A.). He holds a Bachelor of Commerce Degree from Rhods University and an MBA from the University of Cape Town.

John Wauchope OAM

Independent Non-Executive Director
FAIM, FAICD

John has extensive experience in the insurance/finance and community health sector. He has been involved in board positions with private and not-for-profit companies involved in financial and legal services, risk and compliance management, aged care services and community health.

John's public sector experience includes local and state government, with a number of board appointments to statutory bodies including the Country Fire Authority [CFA] and Western Water Corporation.

He is currently a non-executive Director of Transaction Capital Risk Services Australia Holdings Ltd and of Recoveries Corporation Group Limited and related entities and is Chair of the Audit and Risk and Remuneration and Capabilities Committees.

John is a Fellow of both the Australian Institute of Management and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Leon Sholl LLB

Group Legal Advisor

Leon has practiced as a Litigation Lawyer for 48 years and is one of the founders of recoveriescorp. He commenced the forerunner of Mason Black Lawyers in Victoria in 1991 and then in 2002, incorporated Mason Black Lawyers in New South Wales.  As a Solicitor Director of Mason Black Lawyers, Leon’s role includes client relationship management, business development, the mentoring of staff and advising the Board on matters of compliance, governance and strategy.

Positions, Committees and Memberships: Executive Director/Solicitor Director, Audit and Risk Committee Member, Remuneration and Capabilities Committee Member, Chairman Compliance Committee.

Antony Barnett

Company Secretary
B.Com, B.Acc, CA, HDipTax Law

Antony commenced as Chief Financial Officer of Transaction Capital Australia (TCA) in June 2017 and was appointed as Company Secretary in November 2017.

Antony’s appointment leverages on Australian acquisition opportunities within areas which Transaction Capital seeks to explore. He brings to the Group strong regulatory reporting expertise and a wealth of accounting, assurance  and audit experience – his most recent role, as Principal, in the Deloitte Private Audit in Melbourne. Previously he was a partner at GMK Partners, a boutique accounting practice in Melbourne, as well a partner at Grant Thornton International in Johannesburg South Africa.

In addition to his CFO and company secretarial responsibilities,  Antony’s focus is to assist and support the increased regulatory and statistical reporting requirements which the Group faces in the future.  He acts as a key liaison point between Transaction Capital Limited in South Africa and recoveriescorp, enabling the Group to more easily adapt to regulatory change and responding to updates from external regulators.

Nicholas Harrak

Chief Executive Officer

As Chief Executive Officer of recoveriescorp, Nicholas works in association with the Board of Directors to shape the future direction and underlying strategies of the Group brands, products and services.

In his role, Nicholas leads, inspires and empowers a diverse C-suite and highly specialised Executive Team across Australasia. He is responsible for the development and implementation of an industry-wide business strategy, working closely with government, the community and key business industry groups to continue to grow the Government, Insurance and Commercial sectors, in order to reach our company vision of building a sustainable future for the community at large.

Having held six management and executive roles within recoveriescorp spanning 18 years, most recently as Chief Executive Officer, Nicholas is an experienced and successful strategic communicator, a committed leader, and  a trusted change agent.  Adaptive and agile, he brings an outcome-focused and collaborative approach to the role and is invested in continuous improvement and technological advancements for the business, human capital and clients alike. 

He holds a Bachelor of Legal Studies from La Trobe University and has undertaken post-graduate studies in Business and Legal Practice. 

James Higgins

Chief Financial Officer
BCom, CA, Grad Dip (Ins), ANZIIF Fellow

James joined recoveriescorp in 2010 as the Group Finance Manager. With over 20 years of experience working as a Chartered Accountant, James has worked with some of Australia’s leading Insurance and Financial Services organisations in a variety of roles, covering both operational and strategic responsibilities.

James has broad experience in managing teams in both financial and operational accounting.

An asset to our organisation at recoveriescorp, James is responsible for the Group’s varied financial and business support functions and direction.

Trudie Balthazaar

Chief People & Culture Officer
BA

Trudie has more than 25 years of experience in senior leadership roles across the government, insurance and finance sectors.

She is an experienced organisation development manager with proven background in strategic planning, change management and leadership development. She has a key focus on aligning the people and culture strategy to the business strategy of an organisation.

Trudie leads a team of HR, Recruitment, Learning and Development specialists who drive the development of initiatives to enhance an internal work environment that is values based and ensures staff are motivated, supported and equipped to perform at their best.

Craig Rowe

Chief Information Officer
MTech (Bus. Sys. Des.)

Craig is a skilled IT professional with 20 years of experience in a variety of technical and leadership roles. For 15 of these years he has been working directly for recoveriescorp and Advanced Collection Systems, and has supported his experience with post-graduate studies, graduating with a Master of Technology in Business Systems Design and Management.

With a background in software development, Craig has been instrumental in implementing innovations in our collections system (ACS) and associated interfaces, driving business process improvements. His experience and understanding across different industry sectors has allowed him to effectively manage various client and IT relationships at all levels. He is responsible for Information Technology operations and the Group’s strategic direction, ensuring current and future requirements are met.
